Seattle Kokikai Aikido

Welcome!

About Us

If you are interested in learning Aikido, we invite you to study with us! We are a non-profit, community practice group sharing high quality training in central Seattle. Whether you are experienced in the art or have no idea what you’re getting into, you can get in touch, visit a practice and discover what we do. If you haven’t done Aikido before, you might find training with us surprising. Our practice is empowering. Not just in the ways you’d expect from a martial art (fitness, coordination, self-defense proficiency) but also in ways that are enriching for day to day life (confidence, calmness, mental clarity, etc.)

Our practice is also completely cooperative, in the way that a team might scrimmage with itself. We like to play hard to challenge ourselves, but always with the intention of helping each other improve. In that way, everyone has the opportunity to practice successfully, regardless of size, shape or background. Our aim is not to train soldiers or champions, but ordinary people of exceptional character and contentment.

Because we have a fascination and appreciation for our practice, we’re always interested in sharing it. The only way to find out if Kokikai Aikido will be as fun and enriching for you as it is for us is to try it yourself. If you’re curious, come find out!

Membership Dues

Adult membership dues are currently $80 per month. This membership covers participation in all of our practices. In addition to monthly dues, we also value from our members a commitment to regular practice and a small amount of additional support such as through helping with cleaning or administrative tasks. Administration and teaching is done on a volunteer basis by members.

Scholarships

We are a community-based, not for profit practice group with the intention of keeping our training widely accessible. If you are interested in participating but dues would create a financial burden, please inquire about a potential scholarship. SeattleKokikaiAikido@gmail.com

Family Training

Our dojo doesn’t offer a kids program, however we invite parents and kids to train together in our regular adult practices. Here’s how it works:

  • Our classes are oriented for adults. In order to be included, kids must be able to participate without requiring significant special attention. Twelve years or older is a good starting point, but not a fixed rule. We assess individuals case by case to determine if our training is a good fit.
  • It is required that parents are training whenever their kids are training. We will consider allowing kids to train without their parents present typically at age sixteen.
  • Parents and kids training with us works best when they are each individually inspired to train. Parents coming only for the benefit of their kids, or kids being pressured into training by their parents, are both scenarios we discourage.
  • We regularly make small modifications to practice to ensure everyone can train safely. In the case of kids, this mostly means we’ll adjust techniques to protect joints from injury.
  • A kid’s membership can be added to a regular adult membership for an additional $30 per month

Instructor

Sensei David Zeger began training at the Aikido Kokikai Southwest dojo in Tempe, Arizona in 1994. He began facilitating Aikido practices at the Arizona State University Kokikai Aikido Club in 1998 under the guidance and instruction of Veronica Burrows Sensei and David Nachman Sensei. Since moving to Seattle in 2000, he led practices regularly at the University of Washington Kokikai Aikido Club and (former) Aikido Kokikai Seattle dojo. Since 2004 he has continued his study and instruction through sharing practices with Kokikai Aikido practitioners in Seattle’s Central Area. Some practices are also led by other senior dojo members, typically having more than a decade of practice experience.
